How To Network Your Computers at Home

Have you ever thought about networking your computers at home? If you have a small collection of computers around the house (and a small collection of computer users), you can connect each one of those computers to one another and share data, software, and hardware including a single Internet connection. There are many creative uses for home networking, however it's an ideal situation when upgrading each computer to the same capability is financially out of the question. On a home network, each computer has access to the equipment of the better machine in the group as if that equipment were their own.

Connecting computers with either an Ethernet cable or a Wireless connection can create a home network. The easiest and cheapest method uses an Ethernet connection, which requires a series of network cards, a cable for each computer, and a router. The network card is similar to the old modems we used in the past to connect to the Internet, however in a home network, it's used to communicate with every computer that's connected to it.

But please also be reminded that having a wifi inside your home is now far better than using ethernet cables. I myself find it more useful to have wireless network than having a cabled network especially if you are using a laptop.

You'll want to first, select the computers that will connect to each other and then install the network cards inside each of them. Then you'll connect a cable to each computer that will communicate with the server. These cables won't connect to the server directly. Instead, they'll connect to the router. To enable Internet access for each computer, this router will need to connect with a modem of the host machine.

Once the hardware is set up correctly (you'll need to read the instruction manual of your equipment for details), you can then setup the network from Windows on each machine. Within Windows, you can set up a home network similar to the way that you set up an Internet connection. Only this time, you'll set up a LAN (Local Area Network) connection.

Windows should walk you through setting up a LAN after starting the computer and once complete, you can begin to connect one of your machines to the network. You can do this through Internet Explorer by typing in the address and password required to access the router (the address and password required to access the router will be in the router manual).

Connected to the network, each computer can send files back and forth, open programs on a remote computer, play the sound files and videos located on another computer, and share a single Internet account to browse the web, download files, or chat with someone in an entirely different country. If a single printer is available on only one computer in the network, every connected PC can send documents to it and print them out. Kids will enjoy the ability to play multi-player games and adults will enjoy the ability to blast a single message to everyone at once or maintain a group schedule.

Since we're describing a home network that will connect to the Internet, you're strongly advised to install a protective firewall program to thwart Internet viruses, worms, or other damaging spyware code. Firewalls prevent - but they don't repair. Only anti-virus and anti-spyware programs can reverse damage. So you should install a firewall on the computer that grants access to the computer, and then install an anti-virus and anti-spyware program on each of the remaining computers in the network.

If you have files that shouldn't be shared (bank statements, credit card information, etc.), you can restrict their access in one of several ways. You can put them in a new folder and then remove the "read" permissions for that folder. Or you can specify who can (and who cannot) access specific files with a password from within Windows Control Panel.

How To Choose The Best Computer For Ministry?

What is The Best Computer For Ministry?

Maybe some of you are planning to buy a computer that you can use for your ministry. The problem is, there are so many brands and so many models to choose from. Which one is the best?

We really can't tell which one is best by just looking the physical nature of the models and brands that you are looking at. But I enlisted here some factors that you may want to consider in choosing the best computer that will deliver your needs for your ministry.

Before I start, let me just describe you general terms so that you may not get lost. Allow me to use the “high-end” computers for pc's that cost at least $1000 and up, “low-end” for $300-500.

Ok, let's go to the real issue.

Mobility

I think in our days now, mobility is one of the most important thing to consider in buying computers. If you always travel, I suggest that you buy a laptop instead of a desktop computer. On the other hand, if you seldom travels and you want to get the most out of your computer, then get a desktop PC.

Desktop PC's though imobile, they are more flexible in terms of upgrades and capabilities. Due to the ease and cheapness to upgrade, it gives more flexibility for its users as to purpose.

Purpose

This is a very important factor that you will have to consider. “Where will you use your computer?” Are you going to use it for graphics? How about for simple encoding and plain office purposes? Video editing? What?

If you will simply use it for encoding and office purposes, then I sugges that you just get the low end pc's or laptops. If you will be using it for video editing and graphical editing, I strongly suggest that you get a high-end computer.

Just a note, the main key for graphical and video editing includes a good RAM, good Video Card, and a HUGE harddrive. So if you have bought a brand new, low end computer, upgrading your RAM, video card and harddrive will probably do the job.

Price

How much is your budget? I guess this the least of all factors that you need to consider. Acquiring a computer will certainly cost you something. But you do not have to spend a lot for something that will not deliver its purpose in its fullest.

However, if you just have a good budget and you can afford to buy the high-end computer, then why not go for it. If you have a limited budget, don't worry, I believe that with a limited budget, all the more that you can get the most out of your computer.

Operating System To Use

There are 3 main operating systems that PC's usually use, WINDOWS, LINUX, MAC. But I will only discuss Windows and Linux since MAC usually comes with their own customized computer units. Now, which one are you going to use? This is also a very important question to answer.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 which is the current trend are RAM and Video Memory greedy. So if you are planning to install them, then I suggest that you follow their system requirements:

RAM 1 G (minimum)
Video Memory 128 mb (minimum)
and several Gigs of Hard drive

If you are planning to use LINUX, particularly Ubuntu, then you don't really need a high-end pc. Linux usually have a very minimum requirements. The latest edition of Ubuntu can already run well with the following specs:

RAM 256 MB
Video Memory 64 MB
and about 1.5-2 Gigs of Hard drive

Model

For laptops, I suggest DELL, Compaq, Acer, HP and Lenovo. These brands have a better feedback than other brands. Just a quick tip. Try to upgrade the default RAM if there is still extra slot. This will make your laptop run faster than what you are expecting from it.

For desktop computers, I strongly suggest that you do not buy a “one brand” complete package. If you can assemble your own desktop PC (which will I also teach you later how to do it), the better. This will give you more room for customization and further improvements in the future that will sooth your needs.

Well??? I hope these factors can help you decide what PC will really give what you want.

Why Change To UBUNTU?

Why Do We Need To Change To Ubuntu?

A friend of mine has a window 7, and he said window 7 still have lots of bugs and is hard to find suitable drivers for it.

If you are really looking for a fully licensed, fully functional operating system for your office, I strongly suggest that you switch to Linux particularly Ubuntu.

Here's the common reasons why people are hesitant to change to ubuntu:

  1. They cannot use their Window based softwares particularly games, and in our case as ministers, Bible softwares. But then again, I already have discovered a solution on this as I have posted in my tech blog.
  2. They cannot use the "Web Cam-Audio" feature of their laptop. This is because Ubuntu hass no "Client Messenger" that really supports this. But when it comes to messenger, there is completely no problem. This is also the only negative feedback that I can say against UBUNTU.
  3. They are already satisfied with what they have learned at first. Changing to UBUNTU is like changing a cellphone. You will have to get used to the arrangement of buttons, words used inside the system, etc.

But they are almost the same basically. It's just you need to get used to it. Once you get used to it, you will really enjoy it.

Reasons Why Change To UBUNTU
  1. Ubuntu is simply more secure than that of Windows. I am not saying that it is a hacker free OS, but simply more secure.
  2. Does not require tremendous amount of RAM. If you have a laptop about 2 years old, that has 80G HDD, 512MB RAM, you can still run the latest edition of UBUNTU, but these cannot run ViSTA and windows 7. In short, it has a very low requirement.
  3. Ubuntu is 99% Virus Free. It's not 100% because there are some virus that exists in linux world, but it is very rare.
  4. More stable. In my personal experience for almost a year of having ubuntu in my laptop, I really didn't have problem of slow down despite of the fact that I am already using 75% of my total hard drive. Try that in windows and it will take eternity for you just to boot up.
  5. COMPLETELY FREE. Are you a minister or a pastor? If you are, are you using pirated software of windows? If you do, then here is a replacement, completely free, completely legal. Why don't you change?

It's a step of faith to change in UBUNTU if you are already used with Windows. Hehehe... Hope this can be a blessing!!!

How To Install E-Sword In Ubuntu: A Better, Easier Way

So far, for about a year now in my use of Ubuntu, I really haven't got a realiable Bible Software for Ubuntu in comparison to the famous E-Sword. I tried searching the net for any Bible Software that I can use. There are two that I have found, the Bible Time and the Gnome Sword.
Bible Time has a real good interface as that of the E-sword. My only problem with this is that the Bibles used here are not reliable. I have found several errors in comparison to the printed version. One of my friend said that developers probably copied it manually from the Bible that is why there are lots of typographical errors in it.
Gnome Sword has a more reliable versions of the Bible. My only problem is that, the interface is difficult to dicipher. I feel like I am totally using a different software with totally different format. Furthermore, I find it hard to understand the “how to's....” of Gnome Sword.

My desire is to install E-Sword. The best FREE Bible Software on the net. But how am I going to install this in my Ubuntu when it only function in Windows.

I scanned the net for answers and I only found ONE answer among the blogs I have read. They say that you can install E-Sword using WINE. However, as I tried reading the instructions, it will be very difficult for the non-geeky people to install it. There are several file extentions that you will have to download in order to allow it to run. Furthermore, the reviews are devasting. Some says it runs, but very slow.

Today, I will be presenting another way in installing E-Sword under UBUNTU.

Before we start, let me tell you this, I would say that WINE sucks. It only gives an immediate solutions to light Windows softwares but cannot run heavier ones, not even Chikka, Publisher, and other Window programs.

Let us begin. The main answer to your agony is the use of VIRTUAL BOX. First and foremost, you must install Virtual Box. Virtual Box is a virtual engine where you can install a totally different operating system that will run under UBUNTU. The main advantage of this is that, you can run more programs, without any problem because when you run it, it will just function “JUST LIKE” you have a Window OS.

Though, it still cannot be the ultimate answer for running programs since it still cannot run heavier programs especially the one that uses enormous RAM like games and graphical softwares, still, this is the best that you can have, FAAAAR.... better than WINE.
Installing virtual box is very easy. Just follow this instructions.

  1. Click Application> Add/Remove
  2. In the search box, type in “Virtual Box”
  3. Click the Virtual Box, be sure that it has check on the box.
  4. Click Apply Changes.

Now, that you have Virtual Box you need to install Windows. You need a fully functional Window installer. But before that, be sure that you have the right settings.

In your installation you will be asked with many questions, it is very simple to answer so that it would not be a big problem. Furthermore, you can always make changes later on.

Let's set up everything first before inserting your CD.
  1. Click Virtual Box OSE
  2. Click Next.
  3. Follow instructions. Type in “Windows” for the name, OS Type “Windows XP”, Base memory 500MB (depend on your will), Video Memory 64 MB (again, it's up to you how much will you allocate). Harddisk, 10 G (automatically expands), CD/DVD Drive installed, Audio ALSA driver.

If everything has been set up, you are now ready to install Windows.
  1. Insert CD/DVD installer.
  2. Click “Windows” (the name of your virtual OS) > Click “Start”
  3. In a short while, you will be brought up to the page as if you are installing a Windows. Follow instructions and the way it go.
  4. After installation, I strongly advise to also download and install the “Install Guest Addition”. It will enhance your usability for Windows. It's a kind of bug fixer, so don't miss it.

Now that you have installed Windows in your virtual drive. All you have to do is to run it under the Virtual Box OSE. Once the window is running, then you can freely install now your E-Sword exactly as if you are installing it in “Real Window” OS.
Some Few Things To Remember

In running Windows with Virtual Box OSE, put it in mind that you are really running windows in a new computer and you have to shut it down properly.

Secondly, the Virtual Box OSE that I am talking about, which is also downloadable using UBUNTU does not come with the auto-detect program for USB. So if you are thinking that you can install something in it using USB, just an info, you CANNOT do it. BUT, there is a way. I haven't tried it yet so far, but you can. Just Google “How to use USB in Virtual Box OSE”. You need to be a little geeky though to succesfully run it.

Another solution for this is to burn your softwares first in a CD/DVD, then insert it to your ROM for it. Virtual Box OSE detects and read it.

Now, I am enjoying UBUNTU a lot better. Why? Because I can now use Chikka, work with Publisher, use E-Sword, play Window based games (the slower ones), etc. using Virtual Box OSE.

Basic Software Terminologies

Getting help with your computer software can be easier when you know the correct terms to use. One of the biggest problems that new computer users have with technical support is not knowing how to correctly describe the problem that they're having. And it isn't fair to expect a tech support person to automatically know what a "thing-a-ma-jingy," or "whatcha-ma-call-it" is.

The following describes the correct names for common components of software so that when you experience a problem, you can effectively describe an issue that you're having and a technician can readily resolve it.

User interface - this is the visual design of a program. It may contain squares, boxes, words, icons, and buttons. If you're experiencing insufficient memory for example, you might see black rectangles across the user interface of your software programs.

Title bar - this is the top-most part of a program that displays its own name or it may describe the contents displayed in another part of the interface. If a program is incorrectly coded, you may see a wrong description in this part of its interface.

Menu bar - this part of a program displays menu items and menu options. Some of the most common parts of a menu bar grants access to File commands, Open commands, Save commands, and Print commands. An example of an error in this part of an interface would be if an option was missing or grayed out (lighter in color).

Tool bar - this part of a program displays small icons across the top which represent tools. Clicking an icon will open a tool or process a command that might also exist on a program's menu bar. Problems in this part of an interface are uncommon, however if you find yourself repeatedly clicking an icon with no results, you can correctly describe the problem by referring to the toolbar.

Minimize, Restore, and Exit buttons - these three buttons are usually located on the right-most upper part of a program's interface and each allow you to minimize a program's screen, restore it to its original size, or shut down the program completely.

Scroll bar - this convenient tool allows users to move data up and down the computer screen.

Status bar - this part of a program is located at the bottom-most part of its interface, and it usually displays small messages that indicate the progress of a command or task. If programmed incorrectly, an application might display the wrong information in this area.

Context menu - like the menu bar, a context menu displays when a user right-clicks on something. It displays commands just like what you see on a File menu or a Help menu.

Input box - input boxes are usually small rectangles that allow you to type data into a simple interfaces like a webpage or browser window. If you find that you can't type information into one of these, you can effectively resolve the issue with a technician by calling it an input box, rather than a "white rectangle," or "place to put in text."

Button - buttons perform a command after a user clicks them with a mouse. Problems occur when the text of a button is grayed out or if it doesn't appear to sink into the screen when clicked.

Check box - a check box is a small box that allows a user to indicate several choices among many. When clicked, a small "x" displays inside a box. Similar to the check box, a radio button allows a user to indicate a single choice among many. Problems with radio buttons and check boxes occur when a user makes one choice, but the interface reacts as if the user made many choices (or none at all). When describing a problem to a technician, be sure to indicate whether the problem occurs with a check box or a radio box. Computer novices mistakenly interchange the names of both of these controls.

I just hope that these short list of Software Terminologies will be a good help in understanding your software.

What Is Batch File And How Does It Work?

If you're familiar with MS-DOS at all, you'll recall that it's a command-driven operating system that performs functions issued at the C:> prompt. The only way to get an MS-DOS computer to do something was to type a command at this prompt and if you can imagine, it was a rather cumbersome way to use a computer.

As an example, to load up Microsoft's simple editing program, you had to type the name of the drive that the program was on, the directory that the program was in, and then the name of the program. So if Microsoft Edit was in a directory or folder named "Process," you could start the program by typing, "C:>process\edit.com" Then, and only then would the program load up for use.

This is a small command, but just imagine if you had a program that was deeply nested within a series of folder. You could end up typing a command as wide as your computer screen or worse, long enough that the entire command would have to wrap onto the next line! Now imagine having to type these long commands every time that you wanted to start a program. Yikes!

That's one of the reasons why batch files became so popular. Batch files are small text-based documents that contain a bunch of these commands on their own lines. When executed, they would process each command without the user having to type each and every one of them.

When Windows was developed, the need for typing commands was essentially eradicated thanks to the introduction of the point-and-click (mouse) interface. But this didn't stop the batch file fever that started under MS-DOS - and in some small circles, batch files are still as popular as they were in the beginning.

Even though you may use Windows XP or Vista, batch files can save you tons of time by automatically starting multiple programs and performing different tasks at the single click of a button. They don't require any extensive programming background and they don't need to be encrypted with some weird, expensive compiler. Batch files are plain text files, and you can build one for your own personal use with Windows' Notepad.

You could make a batch file that loads up your favorite websites at once for example, or you could make a batch file that fills your desktop with the most important applications for the day. To do so only requires a little knowledge about the locations of these applications.

Let's say that every day we need to load up the Yahoo web browser, Microsoft Word, and then the calculator that comes with Windows. Instead of doing this by hand, we could write a batch file to do it for us.

First, we'd load up Notepad and type in the following:

START "http://www.yahoo.com"
START "c:/program files/microsoft office/office/winword.exe"
START "c:/windows/calc.exe"

We would then save this data into a file named, "mytasks.bat" onto the Desktop for easy access. Each time we double-clicked on this file, the Yahoo website would load up, Microsoft Word would start, and the simple calculator would pop up.

Since we want these programs to load every day, we could create a shortcut to this file and then place the shortcut inside our computer's Start Up folder. That way, these three programs would load every time we turn on the computer. If you wanted these programs to start minimized, you could type the following into a batch file instead:

START http://www.yahoo.com /m
START "c:/program files/microsoft office/office/winword.exe" /m
START "c:/windows/calc.exe" /m

This will run all three programs as before, however the "/m" parameter will minimize them so that they don't clutter up the desktop.

Other people have found much more creative and effective ways to use batch files, but the important thing is that you know they're a resource you can use to save a few seconds or minutes in performing important tasks. We've come a long way from MS-DOS, but it's still a valuable source of automation that anyone can use with no programming knowledge at all.

Ultimate Plugin Smart Update Pinger Review

I've been using wordpress in one of my blogs. I came to know the UPSUP from one of the blog gurus that highly recommends it for it does the pinging automatically and solving one of the pinging bugs in the default wordpress. And this plugin is really cool and it does a lot of help.

However, after a good deal of time observing this plugin, I found out that it has some detrimental effects especially if your wordpress blog is being hosted in a shared server. Ultimate Plugin Smart Update Pinger really slows down the posting time and consume a large amount of CPU effort which sometime causes server to crash.

In my personal experience, I had my site suspended for having a CPU spike of 140++ while posting. The tech support guy told me that it was really necessary for my site to be suspended for it may cause damage to other sites in the same server. Shew.... and that caused me a two-day downtime. They made investigation if my site has been hacked, or was caused by some scripts, or if I made some deceiving modifications.

So I told them that they have to reactivate my site so that I can deactivate some plugins including the UPSUP. It is because in my observation, if UPSUP is active, my posting time takes me up to 20-30 seconds before it makes a post. After deactivating it, I only now have about 5-8 seconds of posting time.

Well, here's the thing. I admit that UPSUP is such a great plugin. But definitely it slows down your site which may also cause you being banned from your hosts. My advice, if you are using it on a dedicated server, go on then. But if you are only paying a small amount of money in exchange for a shared hosting, then better to look for another plugin.

The Best Hosting Company in the Philippines

I've just finished transferring to a new hosting service company locally here in the Philippines. And I just want to share my experience with this hosting service provider and give a commendation for their exemplary customer service.

web.com.ph
has been operating now for several years and has build up a pretty good reputation of delivering a very good service. Here are just some of the things that convinced me in giving this commendation:

1. Real Cheap. If you are looking for a real cheap hosting company, I believe that this hosting company has been giving one of the cheapest offers that you can find in the Philippines. Considering their performance and support, I believe that they even have over delivered what you have paid for.

We are already used to the saying, “You'll get what you paid for”, but this is not true with this hosting company, “You'll get MORE than what you paid for.”

2. EXCELLENT Customer Service – This is where I got most excited with this hosting company. With my desire to transfer my website to a better hosting service provider, I tried searching the net for local hosting companies that can really deliver what I need. I have inquired several hosting companies and some of them replied after a few days. I kept on searching until I came across www.web.com.ph and to my surprise, they have a real online support.

I already have seen several hosting companies that offers online support, but when you check them, they are most of the time offline. But unlike this one, they are online most of the time. And even if you have an urgent inquiry about your account with them, they will try their best to respond to your email to see to it that you are not left in limbo.

One time it's holiday and I am really having a problem with my site. So I tried to email the tech support hoping that they will answer after two days because of a long holiday. To my surprise, an answer came in to my inbox after 3 hours, in the midst of holiday. And guess what who responded? The owner of web.com.ph himself.

3. Best Hosting Plans – I think they have the best hosting plans. As for me, I took the Standard hosting plan which gives me 1GB space, 20GB Bandwith, unlimited subdomains and email accounts and many more. All these for Php 1200.00 (about $25) a year only. Yes it is a shared hosting, but they still have a fast service.

To summarize what I am saying, here's their press release video:

Five Common Mistakes When You Plan to Make Money Blogging

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alex_Sysoef]Alex Sysoef

When people talk about how to make money blogging, their descriptions make the entire process sound easy. While there are indeed six-digit bloggers somewhere around the world, the majority of blogs out there find themselves struggling to earn even a few dollars a month. Don't be one of them.

Stagnant visitor count

Your site may have 1,000,000 hits, but expect those hits to steadily decrease if you do not reach out and find a new audience. You can do this by actively participating in venues around the Internet. Forums, marketing sites, affiliate reviews, and even other blogs are excellent ways to increase the presence of your blog. Keep tabs in what's happening in these sites, and make sure you make your fair share of posts in these sites to advertise your own blog. Just remember not to advertise your blog too blatantly, as you may end up getting kicked out of these venues.

Posting irrelevant content

No one cares if your pet dog died or your girlfriend/boyfriend broke up with you, at least none of your blog visitors. People visit blogs to learn something new and to avail of a service, not to listen to your personal grievances. That does not mean, though, that you should not inject a personal quip here and there. Just make sure that you do so in a constructive manner that will catch the attention of your readers.

Lack of updates

Do not treat your blogs as 'fire and forget' projects. The more frequent the posts are in your blog, the more readers will keep checking back to see something new. They are hungry for information, and it is your job to keep that hunger fed. While daily posts are ideal, even more frequent updates keeps the readers on edge and constantly visiting your site for news and relevant information.

Failing to optimize keywords

Remember that search engines are your best friend. The most likely way for a reader to find your blog would be to use a search engine to find keywords associated to your blog posts. Work around a set of keywords and insert them decisively but sparingly around your blog post. Just remember that search engine optimization is not about flooding your post with keywords. Use them three to five times in your article, and spread them every hundred or so words.

Overdoing the ads

Nobody likes intrusive pop-ups, and don't think they will help keep your readers around. While ads are the primary ways in which you earn with blogging, remember to keep them in areas that are readable and non-intrusive. Keep them in check, and avoid pop-ups or screen-blocking advertisements if you do not want to turn off new visitors to your site.

Stagnating visitor counts, irrelevant posts, no updates, poorly optimized posts and ad-bombs are the five most common mistakes people make when they construct their blogs. Keep them in mind, and you will be free to make money blogging without a hitch.

And now I would like to invite you to claim your free instant access to [http://www.expertwordpress.com]Expert WordPress blog installer package that will enable you to create a blog as described above even if you never created a single page!

Ubuntu 9.04 Released: A Preview to The Improvements

Today, I would just like to give a note to my readers that Ubuntu 9.04 has already been released and has been improved. Generally, the looks doesn't have so much improvement. But what's more important is the underneath features.

Before we go to some important improvement, to those who do not know Ubuntu, Ubuntu is a TOTALLY FREE Linux Operating System which is one of the best the you can have out there. So if you are running Windows, it is similar to it in the sense that it is also an operating system, but totally different in its operational environment.

Ok, the improvements. Here are some of the notable improvements as mentioned to the video clip below.
1. Braseo Disc Burning - They just arranged it in a way that is very user friendly.
2. Computer Janitor - The new clean up program which Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 doesn't have.
3. New Themes and New Wallpapers.
4. Fonts have been improved.
5. Shut down times has been improved.
6. Open Office - The Open Office is now in version 3 unlike in Ubuntu 8, the default is still in version 2.4.

I think this is all that I can take note of. I suggest you watch the clip below to it for yourself.

For your information, I strongly recommend UBUNTU if your computer is dedicated to office use. It is far more stable than Windows and has been highly improved since the first time it came out. And the best of all, it is almost virus free.

Some of the Latest Gadgets

First, the Keyboard. A highly sophisticated laser keyboard is on the roll now. It is composed of two sets of lasers. The upper one sets up your keboard once you click it on, and the other one in the lower portion of the gadget senses the lights of your keyboard. Once you stroke a key, it automatically signals the computer that you just pressed that certain key.

Second is the hand scanner. I was amazed when I saw this video. This is the first time that I saw a hand held scanner. It is just about as thick as ballpen, but about 8.5 inches long. All you have to do is to put the document in a flat surface. And from the top, you place the scanner and just allow it to pass through the document and that's it. Your document as been automatically saved in the scanner's memory which you can connect to your computer.

Third, the ebookreader. Today, ebooks is what's in now. I am not saying that printed books are going out of the market, but what I am saying is that ebooks now are digital format of books now. These ebook reader can store up your ebooks. Instead of bringing huge heavy books, if you have it in digital format, you can carry your whole library in just a notebook size, notebook weight ebook reader. Amazing isn't it?

How To Activate All Messengers At The Same Time

Do you have multiple Internet Messengers like Yahoo, Gmail, AIM, etc all at the same time? If you do, isn't it too hastle to login to all of them one at a time just to check if your friend is online?

There's an answer to this hastle. I just discovered this great feature, so better listen carefully.

You can integrate all your Internet Messengers all at the same time. How? You can do this by using the messenger client called Pidgin. All you have to do is to install it in your computer. After installation, you just have to create all your accounts from different messengers once.

Once you log in and start using it, you can automatically check all your contacts from different messengers.

You can download this great software here: http://www.pidgin.im/download/windows/

Note: Please do note that Pidgin does not have a webcam nor audio features. This means that you cannot use your webcams and webmics when using this software. This is the only disadvantage for this program. Other than this, Pidgin is definitely great.

Jamm Mouse Review

My brother just arrived and gave me three gadgets, whose brand is Jamm. I already posted a review about the MP3 Player, and now, I want to give a brief review of the mouse.

This optical mouse is very portable, with a neat roller for easy keeping. It is much more like a regular mouse except that it is too small.

This mouse is literally a mouse size. It is too small that I think it is only good for kids.

I tried using it and it functions well. But my hand really aches after a while.

If you are only going to use the mouse for typing purposes or for a few minutes, then I think this mouse is great. But if you are planning to use your computer or laptop for a long time, then I advice you to get a bigger one.

Jamm MP3 Player Review

Have you seen this tiny little MP3 player. For sure this is not the latest MP3 player, but it does posses some neat characteristics to be branded as "cool"

This tiny gadget has a memory of 1G. It looks much more a USB Flash drive than an MP3 Player. It has a smaller jack-in compared to the regular MP3 Player. It has 2 sets of buttons, Vol-/Back and Forward/Vol+.

What's funny about this MP3 Player is that, it doesn't have a turn on/off button. The player automatically turns-on if you plug in the jack of the earphone and automatically shuts down if you plug it out.

It doesn't come with charger since you don't need one. All you have to do is to plug it in USB port of your PC and it automatically charge itself.

What I don't know as of the moment is how long can it play. What I only tried is to plug it for 2 hours, and played it for about 2 hours also. I think it can go further because it did not stop even after 2 hours.

How To Repair XP

The answer obviously depends on what is wrong with your XP. There are lots of factors that are involve before we can safely say the right way to repair your XP operating system. Some factors are caused by hardware while some are caused by software bugs.

Taking away the hardware factors, let us focus on software factors. I just recently discovered this site that offers a repair of your XP. It is not free, but its worth a try since most of us are not techie. If you are willing to pay the price, then this can be a good solution.

Reimage is offering its one of a kind pc repair technology to the general public. They claim that they can repair most XP bugs and other XP problems. Here are just some of the many things that it can repair:

  • Computer doesn't hibernate

  • Windows pop up message: “Task manager has been disabled by your administrator”

  • IP Config makes computer hang

  • Antivirus 2009/2008 cannot be uninstalled.

  • Antivirus 2009.2008 wallpaper hijack

  • Clicking Internet Explorer creates another short cut instead of opening the browser

  • etc. CLICK HERE.

The big set back of this software is its price. It cost around $65-79. I think this is too expensive for an outdated, faced out software.

With the big turn of our economy, I think it is still better to repair it yourself by spending a little time for personal research over the net. Not only that you will learn a lot, but it is also a way lot cheaper than to pay a third party repair technicians. But if you have no time for research and have lots of reserve money, then perhaps this is a good investment to protect your important files stored in your computer.

Review of Asus AiGuru SV1 – Skype Video Phone

Skype is one of the fastest growing internet phones in the world. Even here in my own place, if people are not using Yahoo Messenger, they are using Skype.

One of the main features of Skype is their development of their own video phones that you can connect in your own PC. All you need is an internet connection. Asus AiGuru SV1 is not a cellphone, but an internet phone.

Asus AiGuru SV1 gives full video conferencing using PC and an internet connection. It is very straight forward to use. You can use a network cable to connect it to your PC or you can use it wirelessly. And of course it is easier to use it wirelessly. All you have to do is to enter your WEP or WPA key via the cursor key and on screen keyboard.

It is very portable and flexible. The housing is adjustable and it comes with rechargeable batteries. With these features, you can easily move it around the house.

Some people who already have this said that the on-screen keyboard is a little fiddly but using a laptop/pc keyboard and mouse makes it easier to use.

Reported price: £219.95

Review Of Printer Lexmark Z515

This printer might be out of market now because this model has been issued about 5 years ago and I must be probably one of the few who have it first. Amazingly, when I checked the market, there are still many online companies that are selling this model, or at least an upgraded model of this amazing printer. Because I have been very satisfied with this printer product of Lexmark, I want to make a review of it.

This printer is capable of printing 12 pages per minute for black and 7 pages per minute for colored. It is has a 4800 x1200 dpi maximum. Click Here for complete specification.

But what really amazes me with this printer is its durability, consistency, and flexibility.

Durability – This printer is probably 85% made up of plastic. But printers like this should not be measured to what it is made of, but to how long it lasts. My Lexmark Z515 is still good and running until now, and it is already 5 years old. It's printing capabillity has never changed a bit. It still fast, still reliable.

Estimatedly, I have printed not less than 5,000 pages already.

Consistency – This printer is consistent in its performance. Once set up, everything will be very easy. Unlike other printers, some are really complicated to operate especially when there are printing failures. I never re-installed the printer driver again once I set it up on a computer. Unlike some printing programs that can easily be corrupted.

I also like the printing program installed. It talks!!! I haven't seen any printer driver that have this kind of software (well at least for the printers that I know of).

The printing result is very nice. The draft mode for text printing is almost good as it was set up in a normal mode. By this, you will be able to save more ink and evidently print more pages.

Flexibility – This printer works even if you have only one cartridge, whether you only have a black cartridge or a colored cartridge, it doesn't matter. It will still work.

Another thing that I can add to its flexibility is its adaptability to adapt itself for ink refills. Just like HP printers, this printer can be refilled using an ink injection refill. You can refill the cartridge up to 3 times before replacing the cartridge

This printer is very light, small, foldable, but reliable.

Review Of NetGear WGT624 Wireless Router

NetGear has the reputation of delivering a good service among its routers. And this one is not an exemption. This wireless router is capable of delivering up to 108 Mbps when used in conjunction with 108 Mbps network cards.

WGT624 is also capable of delivering a good service in video conferencing, downloading large files, photos, and stream MP3 music. It is 10 times faster when used in conjunction with 802.11b wireless networking devices.

When it comes to security, it is equipped with a double firewall (NAT and SPI) which is the first line of defence against any intruder attack, plus a multiple VPN pass through for private communication. It has WEP or WPA-PSK to just allow computer units that you want to connect. Mac addressing is also one of its features and many more.

Setting it up is also not a problem. All you have to do is to put the CD installer in your CD ROM, follow instructions and that's it. Unlike other cheap wireless routers, I did not even spent a sweat in setting this router.

For my personal feedback, I have tried connecting this router to 1 desktop and 2 laptops all at the same time and does not experienced any slow down. When it comes to range of signal, the signal is still very strong within five meters. I can even pick up to 50% of the signal for a distance of 5 meters with a double concrete walling.

So if you have a 2 story house with about 50-60 sq metters floor area, I think this router can still effectively deliver the signal you need for excellent web experience where ever you are in the house.

For more information about this router, you can download the data sheet HERE.

Koobface, Infesting Facebook And Other Social Sites

There has been a report of another social site virus that has been released in World Wide Web. It is said that the virus is dangerous and whose main agenda is to infest the social networking cookies then making a DNS query to check IP addresses that correspond to remote domain. Once it is located, it will then go to log-in sessions using the user's log-in name and password stored in your cookies. It will then search for your other friend users then sends HTTP POST request to the server. (Trend Micro)

In short, Koobface will make auto messages and sends it to your friends. The message have the link from other sites containing this worm. Once it was clicked and downloaded, then it will infect your friend's computers and repeat the cycle all over again.

Please do note that one of the variants of this virus is in the form of fake YouTube Videos.

Source: Yahoo Tech News

Concerning this virus, I don't know if this virus is similar to the spam that we I used to receive in our Friendster account. In my experience, those video clips will be posted in my “comments”. The video picture usually has a lady wearing an underware garments acting to change her clothes. And once you click on the video, it will bring you not in YouTube site but in another site.

I received those comment messages almost all the time before. And when I tried to delete them, it will reappear again. To my surprise, some of them were posted automatically in my profile.

If these kinds of spam messages is related to Koobface, I don't know. But I think the actions is very similar to what has been reported.

CD-R King USB Vaccum Cleaner Review

Just right before I bought my Acer Aspire 4330, I already looked for some add-on tools that I can use to protect my laptop against the harmful environments. This lead me to look for a highly portable vaccum cleaner.

Vaccum cleaner for laptop is not available to all computer stores. I have seen some who sells it but the price is really too expensive which makes me think twice whether or not, I will buy one. Until one day, I found out that CD-R King is selling a hand held, USB Vaccum Cleaner for laptops.

I thought that it was very expensive. To my surprise, its only Php120.00. A very useful tool that helps preserve your laptop keyboard from dust.

This amazing vaccum does not need a battery. All you have to do is to plug it in a USB port and turn it on.

It comes with two kinds of nozzles. One has a brush, while the other one is designed to suck heavier objects like screws that is stucked in tiny areas of your laptop.

Concerning durability, I am not really sure on how durable it is. The body is made out of ordinary plastic. In my opinion, it is not that durable and probably won't last a year if used everyday. But considering the price... I think it is more than fair for its service.

Block Speaker iPod Dock

Are you a fun of Lego? Well, who says it's only for the kids? A Lego like Block Speaker iPod dock has been released in the market. Though these exciting speakers is not really a registered product of Lego, I am sure that it will really have an appeal to Lego fans. By the way, I am not also sure if these block speakers fit the other blocks.

It does not run with batteries, so we can guess that it is getting power from the iPod itself. And for such, it will cause the iPod's battery to run out faster.

So here's the real package deal, buying this block speakers would give you two main things. First, it will serve its purpose as an iPod dock, and secondly, play and improve its look by using other Lego blocks.

When I was a kid, I really love playing lego. I love making space command centers and spaceships with Lego soldiers in it. So sad, these things are not yet available in my childhood. But perhaps, it not yet too late for me to try if I have a chance.

The reported price of these block speakers are: 39.99 pounds and $24.99 respectively.

Extra Income From Paypal

Paypal is the most popular method of paying / accepting and receiving money through the internet. And I think, it is also the biggest in its business. For the past few years, Paypal has evolved into a user and business friendly payment system. With Paypal, paying and accepting payment online has never been easy.

In addition to this, Paypal has an affiliate system which can be an additional income for its members. All you have to do is to encourage people to open an account in Paypal by clicking your affiliate link and fill up the online application form. There's no need to worry because opening an account is completely free.

When your friends opened an account through your affiliate link and they begun to send money or pay online using paypal, you will receive a small percentage of payment and this will be your affiliate income. The more people you refer and the more people among them sends payment, the more income you earn.

But before you do that you need to be a member of paypal yourself (CLICK HERE TO OPEN AN ACCOUNT IF YOU STILL DON'T HAVE ONE). After becoming a member, go to the “Referral” at the buttom of the page and get your personal affiliate link that you can post in your emails and webpages.

Company of Heroes' Review

One of the best game that I ever played that portrays reality is Company of Heroes. With a high video quality and realistic sound, Company of Heroes will definitely run your imagination of what it really means to be at war.

But what I like the most inside the game is the very realistic movements of the characters. You will see medics gathering the wounded soldiers, the sporadic bullet lights inside while under fire, the blowing away of soldiers with granade and other bomb weapons including tanks not to mention the sticky bombs of the Allied powers. Plus a very detailed graphics when zoomed.

Accompanied the reliastic actions is the realistic sound effects. It's sound adds to the intensity of the gaming experience. You will hear realistic sound of bombing, machine guns, and even pistols.

However, the only thing that I don't like in this game is the very limited amount of troops that can produce. If they only allow an unlimited number of units that can be produced, this game will might take over Starcraft.

Dying Widow Scam Letter for Christians

Have you ever received a letter from a dying widow who have a huge amount of money and has no heir? And that she wants you to be the benefactor of a huge donation? Are you familiar with this kind of letter?

Dear Beloved In Christ,
I am Mrs Lisia Manuel, I am married to Dr. Manuel Akoma From Ivory Coast , I and my late husband was into, Estate management and also a government building contractor before my husband earlier death last year January 26 2007. We were married for eleven years without a child due my fibriod problem. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days. Before his death we were both born again Christian. Since his death I have decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home . When my late husband was alive we deposited the sum of $5.5Million (USD) dollars in a Security Firm.Presently the money is still in the Security Firm. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next Four months due to cancer problem. From all indications, my condition is really deteriorating and is quite obvious that I may not live more than two months, because the cancer stage has gotten to a very dangerous stage . Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to good person that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein.

This is why I am taking this decision to donate this fund for charity. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord.Exodus 14 VS 14 says that "the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace".
I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health .My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that Wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and Truth, always be prayerful all through your life.

Hoping to receive your response immedaitely.
Thanks and Remain blessed in the Lord.
l remain yours sister in Christ.
Mrs Lisia Manuel

If you are, please be advice that this is most probably another form of scam letter. Their approach is getting your compassionate heart to help and grant the noble request of taking good care of the poor and needy. They will ask for your bank account to transfer the money, and ask you to send some amount so that they will be able to make the bank transfer as a form of bank charge.

This letter might be appealing to Christian organizations. But beware. Open your eyes and be vigilant. Don't look at the temptation of money. Don't be scammed.

A Google Earth Feedback

I was fascinated with the features of Google Earth. I would say that Google always deliver a good source of information. And now even the geographical information of the world. I love Google, and I am definitely a fanatic of Google.

What's with Google Earth?

Not only that you can see any location in the world via satellite imagery, you can also see the historical imagery of certain places in the world. You can also explore the ocean floor and discover lots of things in it.

Some Issues That You May Face When You Use Ubuntu

To my dismay however, I have some issues concerning Google Earth. I am using Ubuntu Intrepid Linux on an Acer Aspire 4330 Laptop.

They say that this works in Ubuntu, but in my experience, it doesn't work that well. The graphics is too choppy and its like huge pixilize imagery. Sometimes it even crashes and cannot be played.

I don't know if I missed something from the system requirement of Linux below. If ever I did, I do hope someone will be able to explain me.

Minimum:

  • Kernel: 2.4 or later

  • glibc: 2.3.2 w/ NPTL or later

  • XFree86-4.0 or x.org R6.7 or later

  • CPU: Pentium 3, 500Mhz

  • System Memory (RAM): 256MB

  • Hard Disk: 400MB free space

  • Network Speed: 128 Kbits/sec

  • Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 16MB of VRAM - Screen: 1024x768, "16-bit High Color" screen

Recommended:

  • Kernel 2.6 or later

  • glibc 2.3.5 w/ NPTL or later

  • x.org R6.7 or later

  • System Memory (RAM): 512MB

  • Hard Disk: 2GB free space

  • Network Speed: 768 Kbits/sec

  • Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 32MB of VRAM

  • Screen: 1280x1024, 32 bit color

Tested on Ubuntu version 6.06, but certainly works on others.

LG Scam Letter?

Last February 10, I received an email coming from theis email address:

I strongly suspect that this letter is another Scam letter so beware. Here's the complete email:

PeoplePC Online
A better way to Internet
http://www.peoplepc.com

Notice these things which are very common to scammers. I also gave some simple tips and synopsis to avoid being scammed.

1. The email addressed used. Whenever you receive an email like this, look first the email address used. For example if it say that it comes from LG, then its email address should be like: name@lg.com. It is most likely that famous companies like LG, Paypal, Samsung etc, will use their website email addresses rather than use other email address like yahoo, gmail, msn, and even peoplepc etc.

2. Analyze the content. See if the content says that you won a big amount of money from automated lottery and draws. Always remeber, a ligitimate lottery is most of the time a form of business. Meaning you have to bet first, or at least buy something from a certain company whether online or offline before you can join their lottery. Without any investment, even just a time investment, most likely it is a scam even if it explain that your email has been automatically added.

I never bought an LG product in my entire life yet.

Furthermore, internet companies like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL etc, can be sued legally if they will give away your email without your consent. And most likely, you are the one who is suppose to distribute your own email address and not these internet companies.

3. Notice the email of the person to be contacted. Like the number 1 tip, ligitimate business use a reliable email address, bearing the name of the company as its signature email.

4. If it will ask you further information like name, address, contact number, other email addresses, etc, this is most likely a scam who wants to gather personal information to hack. Sometimes, they use your information for illegal activities.

5. Don't ever send money as payment for extra fees so that they can send your big sum of money through bank. Ligitimate draws are most likely free of charge when they send you money, or at least, all fees should be deducted from the amount you won.

I hope that Peoplepc.com will try to investigate and trace who uses their company's name as sender of this email.

We need to be very vigilant concerning emails like this. I just checked the Scam email database and I found out that there are some users who uses peoplepc.com but there is "NO" report yet of this email. So this might be new. BEWARE.

Welcome Solar Powered Phone: Blue Earth of Samsung

Even cellphone companies are now thinking green. Why not? Now that our world is facing lots of problems with global warming and economic crisis, it is only reasonable that we go to alternative renewable energy. It might be a little pricy now but I think this will be a good investment in the long run.

The Blue Earth of Samsung is built out of recycled water bottles. It also has a pedometer that tells you how many trees that you saved by walking instead of driving. It is the first touch screen phone with a solar panel at the back of the phone but without sacrificing the camera feature.

The solar panel is said to run the phone for 3 minutes in 10 minutes charging time using the solar panel. Not bad at all, especially in times that you have runned out of batteries.

In addition, Blue Earth has a widget-friendly TouchWiz interface and dedicated Talk and End buttons. It also comes with Bluetooth, Eco Mode and Eco Walk.

The price, internal storage capacity, media features and other data capabilities is not yet disclosed. I will be waiting for its coming updates.

Chikka Probably Not Compatible With Ubuntu

I tried installing Chikka Messenger in my Ubuntu using WINE. Downloading the files is never a problem. I installed it perfectly. To my dismay, all other parts of the installed new software are running perfectly except the Chikka Messenger itself.

I really do not know the issues behind the program. But Chikka is suppose to be a very light program that can easily be run through WINE. But the fact is, it won't work in my Acer Aspire 4330 with Ubuntu. I am not making a conclusion that Chikka can not be run inside Ubuntu, but it is PROBABLY incompatible with Ubuntu.

I would love to try Yahoo Messenger soon. So watch for my updates.

Chikka Messenger is a messenger used for FREE Cellphone Texting. This is a great program that will really save your load in your cellphones. This software run in Windows.

Issues From Friendster's Gcash Feature

There are some comments going around the Gcash feature of Friendster. Some people are really worried about this feature because Friendster has not proven itself to be trusted when it comes to security purposes. There has been many incidents of spamming. I myself is a victim of these Friendster spams. I think this is a valid concern for this feature especially that it now involves money transfers.

I think one of the issues that Friendster should work on first is the logging off issue. Though many Filipinos now have their own internet connections in their homes (thanks to Globe and Smart) still millions of Filipinos mostly students are using Internet Cafe's for their internet connection. Friendster therefore needs to consider to reconfigure their “logging off” process.

In some social networking sites, once you close the browser, your account of that particular social sites will automatically logged off. Unlike in Friendster, unless you explicitly logged off, your account will still be logged in even after rebooting your computer. And this is a very unsecured way of having a membership sites and a big disadvantage of those who goes to Internet Cafes.

On the other hand, instead of murmuring, here are some tips that you can do to prevent hackers from your account:

  1. Make sure that your account has been properly logged off before you leave the internet cafe.

  2. Double check your account if you have properly logged off. You can do this by clicking the log out button, close your browser, and launch a new browser and go to the log in page again. If you see that your account is still open, then click log off, and do the same process.

  3. Be sure that you don't click the check box that says something like: “Remember Me, Keep Me Signed In, Automatically Sign In”, etc. If there is a check in the box, click it once to uncheck it. Do this step especially if you are in Internet Cafes.

  4. If the three reminders above doesn't work, try to restart the computer, or ask the Internet Cafe attendant to help you restart the computer.

Most hacking happens because of our negligence and carelessness in using membership sites. Of course, membership site owners are partially to be blamed for it. But the point is, where ever we are, we need to be responsible to things that we use, even to our internet membership accounts.
