HP Firefly Laptop Comment / Review

I guess your jaws just dropped while staring at this laptop. This voodoo HP laptop concept is a 17.1" with 1920 x 1200 resolution. It also has a secondary screen that is 4.3" with 800 x 480 resolution. Inside is a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 Gig RAM, 250 Gig 7200 RPM hard drive, and two ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 GPUs set up in CrossFire mode (source: www.crunchgear.com). This machine is heavy for 13 lbs. I would say this is not just a laptop, but a complete replacement for your desktop.

Personal comment based on its look:

Notice the mouse pad? It is located on the right side of the board. I'm not so sure if it can give some advantages or none at all. For most users, every time they use the laptop mouse pad, they uses two hands. Unlike the mouse, it is harder to use the mouse pad especially when we are doing the "drag and drop" operations. In short, it will be harder then for me to use the mouse pad if it is on the right side. How much more if you are left handed?

Another comment is the screen. Most laptops now have a wider look screen. It is more like rectangular shape which I believe a much better look than having a square look. And this laptop, just went back to its old screen shape, square type monitors. I hate this shape.

Overall, I don't like its physical look but this laptop definitely has an outstanding specification. I would say that if you are looking for a better desktop, you gotta have this one. But if you are looking for a real portable laptop, find another one.

Unlock Your iPhone 3G

If you are a Filipino user or someone who has a problem with your use of 3G, guess what, this post is probably for you. Please do check this link: "Yellow Snow"

Please note however that Yellow Snow works with latest iPhone 3G firmware (02.28.00). If you only have a model not later than 2.2, just check the iTunes first before unlocking.

Furthermore, you will need to jailbreak your iPhone before following the procedure in Yellow Snow.

Very important note: There is an initial report that close to half of the unlockers where not able to make it. So I guess you have to be more careful in unlocking your iPhones.

Is UBUNTU a good OS for MSI U115?

This questions also bothers me since I am an UBUNTU user. Knowing Ubuntu however, I think if MSI U115 won't run as of the moment, I believe that it will, soon.

This is just a guess. I think it will still run since UBUNTU is already available on flash drives. If it is, they are using almost the same technology with SSD, there is no reason therefore why it won't work.

I must admit though that further test should be taken if this new "hybrid storage" will be compatible with Ubuntu.

Review on MSI Hybrid Notebook U115

About two years ago, I was thinking if hard discs will be replaced by any memory cards. The dawn of digital memory cards have been a great leap to any computer enthusiasts. And guess what, hard discs now are being replaced by SSD drives (for more information about SSD, click HERE)

Now, welcome to another step of laptop technology. A laptop that uses SSD, MSI U115, or something they call, the laptop with "hybrid storage".

Here's some of the specs:

The MSI U115 will be available with an 8GB SSD/80GB HDD, a 16GB SSD/120GB HDD, or a 32GB SSD/160GB HDD. The netbook will also use the Intel Atom Z530 processor, not the N270 chip used in the MSI Wind U100 and many other current generation mini-laptops. The Z530 uses less power than the N270, which should help prolong battery life. (Source: www.liliputing.com)

Pretty cool isn't it??? You will store your OS in SSD and the rest of the program will use HDD.

The real question however is, what is the main benefit of SSD? SSD is actually smaller than HDD. But the greatest advantage it has is that, it does not have any moving parts unlike the HDD. For manufacturers, it is a lot cheaper than hard discs, and the weight of HDD and the SSD is a big difference. HDD is heavier. For the physical aspect, I think SSD is a lot better compared to HDD.

Let us talk about its performance. They say that SSD is a lot faster than HDD. Hmmm... I think this is true.

My biggest question is this; will MSI U115 stands the test of static electricity and magnetic field? Well, as far as I know, any memory card that uses this kind of technology is ultra sensitive against any magnetic field.

I think manufacturers have made their way up to this. But I think they should try to work this out and assure the public that it is much safer to use the SSD than HDD. It is painful to loose a file, how much more for a one whole drive of files?

MSI U115 might be one of its kind as of now. I just do hope that manufacturers will further develop a safer, more durable SSD.

Review on TEAC X300i iPod Dock

The emergence of iPod docks has dramatically changed the world of iPods. Though it is a little funny because when people developed the iPod, it was intended to replace the Disc Man, making digital music listening more compact, more mobile and more handy. But then again, developers were never satisfied on its phase.

And now, began the development of docks making your digital music player become a component by just simply plugging it to the dock.

Guess what, here come Teac X300i, one of the sleekest design that I ever saw.

This latest iPod dock from Teac supports, CD-R/RW, MP3 audio files, AM/FM radio and boasts of a maximum output power of 5Wx2 + 15W (w/ subwoofer). What makes it sleek is the NXT technology of flat speakers. What more? It is compatible up to the fourth generation of iPods.

This model will be soon released to the market on January 2009. Projected price is 235 Euros.
